4 Short Corner Routines

Short Corner Routines

Everyone loves a Short Corner ? Don’t they ? Maybe you’ll learn to love them

They are playing an even more important part in Grassroots Football, especially in the younger age groups with the heading ban.

These 4 routines will take a bit of learning, but when done well, will without a doubt cause confusion and lead to goalscoring opportunites

Most importantly they are really fun to learn and when it comes off the buzz the kids (and you) will get is brilliant.

For each corner routine, allocate a signal.

Corner #1Both Hands Up
Corner #2Right Hand Up
Corner #3Arms Out Wide
Corner #4Left Hand Up

Short Corner #1 – 3 First Time Passes & a Shot

4 Short Corner Routines

Short Corner #1 involves just the 2 players and relies on the quality of the passes between the 2 players.

The Corner takers gives the signal.

Receiving player runs toward the corner of the Penalty Area to receive the pass (1) and returns it to the corner taker (2) who has run down the goal line.

Player then spins and runs towards the penalty spot to receive the second return pass (3) and have a first time shot. (4)

The job of the other players is to create the space by not occupying that space

This one will work well on either side.

Short Corner #2 – Far Post Deception & Confusion

4 Short Corner Routines

Short Corner #2 is all about Deception and causing Confusion.

The Corner taker gives the signal early

Just the way the players line up for this one will completely throw off the opposition and take away any focus on the midfielder hanging way back outside the penalty area.

Confusion will reign. The opposition Coach will shouting instructions.

The Corner taker gives the signal again. As he does, the front 2 players on the far post make runs across the goal line and beyond the near post.

As they do, the deep lying midfielder start their run.

The Corner taker hits a low ball toward the edge of the box into the unmarked midfielders path, who hits first time, or controls and takes a shot.

This one may take a bit of practise, with the timing of the runs but its a great one to have available, although it will only work once per game.

Again, great fun for the kids, especially as they see the Chaos it will concern.

Short Corner #3 – Create an Angle and Shoot

Short Corner

Short Corner #3 is is the simple one and probably the one used by most teams.

The Corner takers gives the signal.

2 players go to the far side of the penalty area to take 2 defenders with them and create space. They don’t move until the return pass is played.

The attacker runs from the far post for the short corner, takes a touch and lays it into the path of the Corner taker on the edge of the box

They take a touch and drill in the shot.

Short Corner #4 – Create an Angle and Shoot

Short Corner #4 is a good one, but with a lot of moving parts to create the space.

It might take some practise, but when it comes off its going to look GREAT !!

The Corner taker (CT) gives the signal.

Player (1) at the near most goes short to receive pass

Player (2) on edge of the box runs towards far post to create space

Player (1) Passes back to Corner Taker

Player (3) on far post makes a run into space

Corner taker passes the ball to them.

They step over the pass and let it run.

Player (4) comes in from deep making a late run and takes the shot.

Why it Works

Having a range of corners to use is such a great way to score goals.

Especially for the younger ages where heading is banned and just slinging it in is pointless.

The best part though, is they are so fun to learn and when they do come off, the pride they will show is amazing.
