Attacking Drill: Risky Business – How many Points can you rack up ?

Attacking Drill: Risky Business is a really good fun drill that makes your players think tactically.

They have to choose how many players they want to send into attack and try and score as many goals as possible. They can only choose from 1v1, 2v1 & 3v2

Once chosen, that choice stands until the fail to score. Every time the score a goal they get a point, they then turn and attack the other goal and keep going until they miss.

Once the miss, they lose a life and have to choose the next attack.

Attacking Drill: Risky Business – How it works

Put a Goalkeeper in at both ends. Keepers are not on any side, just need to keep the goals out.

Split the rest of the team into two equal teams. Rock Paper Scissors to see who attacks first.

Attacking team stands with Coach on the side of the pitch at the halfway line.

Defending team splits in two, with half behind each goal.

Communication between the defending team is vital here.

Attacking team will decide on first attack.

Coach on half way line will shout it out and point to the direction that the attack will begin against and play the ball to the forward(s) who start the attack.

Defenders to that side will have to react quickly and get the correct number of players out.

Play goes on until either a goal is scored, or the ball goes dead.

If the attacking team score, another ball gets played in and they turn and attack the other goal, defenders on that side now need to react.

Every goal they score they get a point. Once they miss, they lose a life and start back from the middle again.

Once all 7 lives are lost, they switch over and become the defending team.

Defending team now become the attackers and try to beat the score set.

Attacking Drill: Risky Business – Coaching Points

Communication, especially in the defensive area. Being ready quickly is key to close down the attack and limiting the opportunity.

I like this drill a lot and although it is simple, I think the kids will appreciate being able to choose which attacking situation that they will have

What I don’t understand is why would the attacking team ever choose the 1v1 option? This gives them no numerical advantage and should theoretically be a tougher situation (unless a team is really struggling with passing). That said, it feels like the 1v1 option should be worth 2 points if the attacking team scores in that situation, but let me know if you had something else in mind that I am overlooking

Thank you for the drill idea either way. I’m going to use this one tonight with my U10 boys
