Chase down the Dribbler

Chase down the Dribbler is a simple and fun way to start of your training session.

It’s fast and high tempo. A good first touch and close control dribbling at pace is key, as is a quality pass.

This drill isn’t just about catching the dribbler, its about the dribbler maintaining standards at pace and under pressure

Chase down the Dribbler – How it Works

Split your players into groups of 4 (or 5 if you have odd numbers ).

Set up two gates about 25 yards apart.

Place 2 players at each end on the left hand side of the gate. You can use the right hand side, but by using the left side you’re working your players weaker foot which is always good practise.

Player 1 starts with the ball and dribbles at pace toward the other end, when the reach the first pole or cone, then play a good pass to the feet of Player 2.

Player 2 then starts to dribble back to the other end, Player 1 sprints round the back of the gate and then tries to Chase down the Dribbler and tackle them before they get the pass off to player 3.

Once player 3 has the ball, Player 2 becomes the chaser.

Keep this drill going for about 5 minutes.

Chase down the Dribbler – Coaching Points

The key to making this work is ensuring the pass is of good quality and fair to the receiver. Otherwise the drill can fall apart if the passer gives the receiver no chance.

Monitor the passes and forfeit players with 20 burpees if they play poor passes.

Also, make sure the players in each group are of similar speed to keep it fair

Chase down the Dribbler – What to Expect

For the first few minutes, don’t expect many dribblers to get caught.

As the minutes tick on, fatigue will begin to play a part and mistakes will be made. The control won’t be as good, dribble touches might start to decline. Passing with the left foot may become wayward.

Encourage all players throughout the drill to keep the tempo up
