Conditional Overload. 1v0 to 6v6

Conditional Overload is a great way to test your players and how they react to either being 1 or 2 players short, or 1 or 2 players up.

How they use and close down the space, can they react as a team and put quick passes together to escape a press, can they press as a unit or will 1 let them down and give the opposition a way out.

How will the players that start cope with fresh players coming on, can they push themselves and keep up ?

There are so many elements to this drill to look at from a coaches point of view, because of the continual change.

Conditional Overload. 1v0 to 6v6 – The details

This drills starts off as a 1v0 in favour of 1 team ( Keepers are in both ends all the time )

Every time one team scores, the other team gains an extra player.

1v0 becomes 1v1, then 1v1 becomes 2v1 or 1v2 and so on until all players are on the pitch

First team to 8 goals wins.

Conditional Overload. 1v0 to 6v6 – How it Works

Split your players into 2 teams

Put a Goalkeeper in either end.

Yellow Team has 1 player with a free run to score a goal. As soon as they score, Blue teams 1st player enters play in a 1v1 situation. Either team can use the goalkeepers if they want to.

Whichever team loses the 1v1 battle gets an extra player and starts the next attack in a 2v1 situation. If the 2 player team scores it becomes a 2 v 2 but if the 1 player team scores it becomes a 1v3 and so on

If a shot goes wide then the keeper restarts play. If the ball goes out, it goes back to the opposite keeper (of the team that put it out ) and it starts again.

Really good drill that early on encourages dribbling and skills to create the goals in the early stages, but then morphs into a more tactical pass and move as the teams get bigger.

Conditional Overload. 1v0 to 6v6 – Scale Ups

There are many ways to scale this up, in particular after each team has 3 players on the pitch.

You could

  • Make it 3 touch
  • Teams must keep 1 player in the opposition half
  • Can only score in the area
  • Can only score with the players weak foot
  • Must be a first time finish.

You can implement different ones of these at anytime in the game to keep your players on their toes.
