Crossing at Pace – Area of Maximum Opportunity

Crossing at Pace is a fantastic skill for a player to learn

Crossing at Pace

Crossing at Pace is such a great skill to have and this drill is all about creating that good habit.

If a winger has tricks in their locker AND can put a good ball into the box, then they are going to be a defenders nightmare.

This drill is about teaching them that they don’t always have to pick out a player.

By putting the ball into a certain area, it will undoubtedly create havoc and opportunities.

The “Area of Maximum Opportunity” is that corridor behind the defenders and infront of the goalkeeper.

It’s so hard for the defenders to deal with as a bad touch could turn into an own goal, or at least a corner.

Difficult for the Goalkeeper to come and claim because it comes fast and low.

Perfect for a striker and the other winger to go poaching.

How it works

Line a couple of defenders on the edge of the box with a striker in there too.

Start of slowly. With a standing cross and get the winger to just play the cross low into the area

Once they’ve done it a few time, start adding a slow dribble

Then build up until its being done at full pace.

As the pace builds, the consistency of the cross will build.

This is a drill that will have to be worked on over a few weeks, repetition is the key as you want the type of cross to become a habit.

Crossing at Pace – What they will learn

It will teach players to get their heads up and make a decision.

Sometime the right decision is to attack the defender, sometimes the right decision is to play the ball early into the box.

The more the ball gets put into the right areas in the penalty area the greater the chances of scoring.

Crossing at Pace is a fantastic skill for a player to learn, especially when its just about putting the ball into an area, rather than always trying to pick a player out.
