Keeping the Ball

Keeping the ball is such a key part of football at any level.

This drill is designed to help encourage that, and get players thinking about their passes, runs & movement.

Mark out a zone just outside the penalty area with ConesFlat Circles / Discs

3 defenders & 1 attacker must stay inside the zone.

Other players can come in and out as they please.

The attacking team has 3 risk points.

Every time they play a pass or make a run with the ball inside the zone, it is deemed a risk move, so it should encourage the ball to passed properly or the run to be a good one.

If the move comes to an end via tackle or interception, then the attacking team loses a risk point.

The aim is to score as many goals as possible before the risk points run out.

Once the points have run out, swap the teams round.

Scale it Up

Allow who can move in and out of the zone to become more fluid. So anyone can go in and out, as long as the 3 defenders remain in and 1 forward.

Or

Release an extra defender who can come out of the zone.

What to Expect

Keeping the ball will become more of a priority, but it order to do that effectively, communication between the players will have to improve.

Same applies for the defenders, not just ball watching, but tracking runners and keeping their the shape to deal with the passing movement.
