Scanning for Defenders

This is a great drill for all players to teach them about Scanning and being aware of what is going on around them before they receive the ball to help them make better decisions when they do receive it.

It’s all about painting the picture of where players are on the pitch.

Scanning for Defenders helps them assess what is going on around them, and also encourages them to play with their heads up.

By learning how to scan effectively the way your players play will improve significantly.

Scanning for Defenders – How it Works

Set up 2 poles about 25 yards out about 15 yards apart.

Attacker and Defender both start on edge of 6 yard box.

Attacker runs to receive the ball from the Coach.

2 seconds later defender will run towards one of the poles.

Attacker must be scanning before the receive the ball to see which way the defender is going, so they can receive the pass and turn toward the other pole and attack the goal before the defender can recover.

Attack then joins defenders queue, defender joins attackers queue.

Only promp the coach is allowed to give is to call attackers name when they want to them to come for the ball, the rest is on the attacker to remember.

If attacker doesn’t scan and choose to go the same way the defender does then they MUST beat them and score or pick up a penalty ( Press-ups – burpees – start jumps etc )
