Working in Triangles – Switching Out

“Working in Triangles” is all about supporting the player on the ball and giving them options to pass, as the player and / or the ball move, the triangle moves with it.

Sometimes it will be the same players involved, sometimes the players involved will change as the phase of play develops across the pitch.

This drill is a great starter for building the relationships between players and encouraging them to make moves to be in support of each other.

Working in Triangles – Switching Out : How it Works

Set up 4 cones / flat discs in a square between 5 & yards apart.

Then set up 8 more cones / flat discs an equal amount away

Place 4 players on the original 4 cones with 1 player in the middle. There are 4 triangles to play in. Top, Left, Right & Bottom.

The player with the ball will start facing the left triangle ( as image above ). As soon as they play the first pass, the 2 other players will run to the cones behind them and back.

When they arrive back at their cones, the Coach will shout “Left”, “Right” or “Switch” to the player in the middle.

If it’s left or right, the play will move to the top or bottom triangle. If it’s Switch, play will move to the opposite triangle ( the right ) and the other two players will run to the cones and back.

Players should look to get as many first time passes completed as possible in this time whilst maintaining control of the passes.

If a pass goes astray and the move is interrupted all three players in the active triangle to 10 press ups.

Working in Triangles – Switching Out : What to Expect.

Initially this might take a while to stick and the number of passes will be low. Passes will get missed and press-ups will get done.

The transitions between triangles might take a bit of getting used to.

Once it’s been going for a few minutes and they start to focus the number of passes completed will increase and the transitions will improve.

Working in Triangles – Switching Out : Coaching Points

Make sure your players are on their toes and ready to receive the pass whichever foot it comes too.

Make sure the player in the middle is ready to transition which as few touches are possible, ideally 2 or 3 max.

Different type of turns, front foot and back foot will help with this – Check this drill out for help with this
